Pokemon Of The Point In Time - Snorlax! :
time for another 'pokemon of the point in time', and this time its snorlax!
*R/B/Y*
Snorlax
-earthquake
-rock slide
-double-edge
-rest/selfdestruct
physical attacking snorlax. its attack stat is huge - topping 300. its especially monstrous for something with no horns or claws. though it doesn't get explosion, STABed selfdestruct coming from that sort of attack stat becomes the most powerful attack in the game; dealing 90% to mewtwo. or you could heal back some of the health lost by double-edge (which wont be too much since snorlax has the second highest HP in RBY right behind chansey). earthquake and rock slide ensure at least a neutral hit on everything. if you want, though, you could put body slam over double-edge to make up for snorlax's atrocious speed with the 30% chance of paralysis.
Snorlax
-amnesia
-thunderbolt
-ice beam
-filler?
special attacking snorlax. in RBY, amnesia boosts both special attack and special defense (because they were the same stat), a bit like calm mind but this time it _sharply_ boosts stats. thundebolt and ice beam to land at least a neutral effective hit on anything, and the filler can be just about anything (except perhaps tackle...). in RBY, its totally acceptable to have both special and physical attacks in the same moveset because of the absence of an EV (which was called stat experience) cap. it might even be better to have both special and physical attacks; that way you dont get stuck when you're up against something like chansey. then again, a physical attack on this snorlax's moveset wont benefit from amnesia. ah well. you could try surf for novelty value (i wonder where all the water comes from?), or rest to increase its longevity and recover back health lost from using amnesia. in RBY, snorlax was _very_ versitile.
Snorlax
-amnesia
-harden
-rest
-rage
snorlax was the only pokemon i've EVER seen rage reccommended on, so i decided to show the moveset it came from as well. you pad up your defenses until you're untouchable, then rest up, then rage. for a second it sounded really cool to have an enormous tank (tank is slang for a pokemon that can absorb hits extremely well) use rage and slowly gain power from an opponent hitting futile-ly at its HP, but then i realised that you could simply refrain from attacking at all and just use moves like confuse ray and thunder wave before doing anything else, or bide your time (no, dont use bide) with swords dance or something then try to kill it in as few shots as possible. either that or you could switch in gengar.
*G/S/C*
Snorlax @leftovers, "curselax"
-curse
-rest
-return/double-edge
-earthquake
snorlax has to be one of the best suited to curse. its got special defense out the wazoo, HP to back both defenses up, no special weaknesses and speed so slow you'll barely notice the difference. add to that an already-high attack stat and you've got a killer. double-edge does more damage and the recoil is absorbed by curselax's high HP, but return is more dependable. body slam isn't as useful here since you're speed will be so low you probably wont be able to outrun even a paralysed opponent (well, maybe shuckle). curselax is... um, isn't liked much. it got so common (especially on newbie's teams), it was considered 'cheap'. worse than cheap. as cheap as you could... hey, am i just repeating what hagrid said in that first harry potter movie or what? if theres another option for snorlax (which there is), then you should try that instead. add more colour to the game.
but if you do go for it...
beware of skarmory. switch out immediately at the sight of one (dont worry about those lost curses), since its most successful and popular technique (in GSC) is to curse as snorlax is cursing (and it can get in quite a few curses since most curselaxes tend to stay in instead of switching out), keeping up with snorlax as best it can, then it roars snorlax away and starts attacking things. bring in some sort of special attacker when you switch out.
and beware of cross chop - critical hits ignore any stat changes to your defense, and cross chop has the 25% chance of going critical in GSC.
Snorlax @leftovers
-return/double-edge
-earthquake
-rest
-sleep talk
i heard that this is the 'traditional' snorlax set. it is liked a lot more than curselax. looks a lot like ursaring.
Snorlax @mint berry
-amnesia
-counter
-rest
-shadow ball
it was the first working moveset that i made up myself (yeah, i stole the blaze + petaya + sun charizard set from a random moveset guide:blush:). amnesia discourages special attacks, so you can counter any physical attacks with ease (counter + high HP + average-ish defense + one physical weakness rules!). and remember, you dont need more than one amnesia. rest + mint berry to quickly get back the lost HP from the use of counter. and since counter cant touch a ghost, i've got shadow ball to take care of them. but this snorlax cant touch a purely special attacking normal pokemon. not that there are that many; the only one i can think of off the top of my head is blissey, so steer clear of them.
Snorlax @mint berry, "drumlax"
-belly drum
-rest
-return
-earthquake
its a little slow to sweep THAT much, so it'll have to absorb a hit first before pummelling an opponent into the ground. its got just enough defense, and more than enough special defense and HP to do that though. i've never used it, but it looks cool.
Snorlax @pink bow/leftovers, "haze baiter"
-curse
-double-edge
-fire blast
-selfdestruct
the haze baiter. it lures out skarmory (the most popular and best p-hazer from a time when p-hazers weren't absolute essentials), then blasts it away. one of the few times fire blast is reccommended over flamethrower - if fire blast connects, skarm is OHKOed before it knew what hit him. if fire blast misses, skarm will switch out. however, if flamethrower hits (which it does all the time), skarm will not be OHKOed, and will switch out next turn no matter what (well, perhaps it wont if the only other ally it has is 4x weak to fire). so its a choice between a 25% chance of letting skarm get away untouched versus a 100% chance of letting skarm get away at low health. the former is better. once its job is done, it selfdestructs (which is boosted quite significantly by pink bow becuase its already such a devastating attack), or else finishes cursing and double-edges for a while. i only ever saw this particular set once, but this guy was an essential to the team where it came from which consisted of a 4 pokemon baton passing chain, which would become nearly unstoppable in the abscence of a P-hazer.
*R/S/E/FR/LG*
Snorlax @leftovers "curselax"
-curse
-rest
-return/double-edge
-shadow ball
yeah, its practically the same as the GSC curselax, except with shadow ball over earthquake to allow it to at least TOUCH gengar.
drumlax is also used a little in R/S/E/FR/LG (with shadow ball over earthquake).
and if anyone has any more intelligent movesets that haven't already been mentioned, dont hesitate to post! seeyaz! |
