Damage = ((((2 x level divided by 5 + 2) x attack stat x base damage divided by opponent's defense stat) divide by 50) + 2) x STAB beneficial held item x type effectiveness x random number divided by 100, then round down.
thats the fire red/leaf green damage formula; the GSC one is a little different and i'll explain that later on.
multiply the user's level by two, then divide by 5, then plus 2.
multiply this number by the attack stat of the user (whichever one is being used, if you are unsure then go back and read by cheat on attack and special attack). if it used swords dance or growth or something before attacking, you'll need to modify this number according to what its attack stat is after the stat up.
times by the base damage... which is displayed on the status screen. like surf's base power is 95 and aerial ace's is 60, that sort of thing.
divide by the opponent's defense stat, whichever one the opponent is using.
divide it by 50.
add two.
multiply by STAB. STAB is an acronym for Same Type Attack Bonus. if you are using an attack that is the same type as you (or is one of your types), then this number becomes 1.5 otherwise, its just 1.
the beneficial held item is one like charcoal, nevermeltice, etc. and this number will be 1.1 if you are holding mystic water, nevermeltice, charcoal, miracle seed, twisted spoon, black glasses, etc. etc. and the attack you are using is powered up by that item. i'm not sure, but i _think_ choice band comes in here too, and if it is, then put 1.5 here. if you aren't holding one of these items or using the attack type according to them, this number is 1.
multiply by the type effectiveness, you know, whether or not something is super effective. it could be 1 (for neutral effective, eg surf to spinda), or 2 (for super effective, eg surf to ninetales), or 4 (for 4x effective, though the game just says its super effective, eg surf to camerupt), or 0.5 (for not very effective, eg surf to vileplume), or 0.25 (for 4x resisted, though the game just says not very effective, eg surf to ludicolo).
then multiply this by a random number, which is between 85 and 100.
divide this by 100, then get that number and remove all decimals by rounding down.
if you are only interested in the damage you can deal at level 100, simplify the equation to:
Damage = (((42 x attack stat x base power divided by defense stat) divide by 50) + 2) x STAB x type matchup x random number divided by 100, then round down.
the GSC damage formula:
(((2 x Level divided by 5 + 2) x Attack stat x Base damage divided by opponent's defense divided by 50 + 2) x STAB x Type effectiveness x random number divide by 255) +1
refer to above to know what all the words mean. the random number here is from 237 to 255.
if you are only interested in the damage formula for pokemon at level 100, simplify the equation to:
((42 x Attack stat x Base damage divided by opponent's defense divided by 50 + 2) x STAB x Type effectiveness x random number divide by 255) +1
last of all, remember your BODMAS and alway work left to right!
i'll do a quick example...
dragonite's dragon claw vs. kingdra
lets say max stats, modest-natured dragonite, neutral natured kingdra, level 100, maximum damage on the random number, no held items.
Damage = (((42 x 328 x 80 divided by 289) divided by 50) + 2) x 1.5 x 2 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = ((3813.4 divided by 50) + 2) x 1.5 x 2 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = (76.268 + 2) x 1.5 x 2 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = 78.268 x 1.5 x 2 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = 114.402 x 2 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = 228.804 x 100 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = 22880.4 divided by 100, then round down.
Damage = 228.804 rounded down = 228!
oh no! depending on how much HP kingdra has, it is most likely NOT going to be a one-hit-KO if kingdra has totally maxed out special defense. bye-bye, dragonite, i dont need to go all through the calculations again to work out that if you are hit by ice beam from kingdra, you're dead.
