Pokemon Emerald for Nintendo GameBoy Advance has been released. Rejoice. I have
a tonne of 6th form exams coming up, not to mention having to write this for

1.4 Useful Websites
===================
These are the websites that give useful Pokemon information:
http://www.serebii.net
- a website that covers everything Pokemon! From the trading cards to the games
this is a very useful website. It is best known for its anime information and
hacking abilities of the new games. A very good site all round, and considered
the best by many (but not all).
http://dynamic3.gamespy.com/~psypoke
- A great website with realms of information on the new and current games.
Brilliantly organised, they aren't missing a lot. Great anime informatino as
well.
http://pokefor.greenchu.de/meowth346
- Most Pokemon fans fall into two groups. Either they love Serebii, or love
Pokefor. You cannot monopalise the internet. Neither is the best site, they
have good qualities. This has extensive details on the maths of Pokemon, good
for working out the power of moves, calculators.
http://www.netbattle.net
- One of the two main competative battling simulators on the internet. This one
is better for those who are unfamiliar with the commands to make mIRC work and
in truth the only difference is their authenticity of the battle part they're
trying to emulate.
**if you wish to have your site added to this, or think you know of a site that
has something to offer then send an e-mail with the title "e-mails".

==============================================================
What should |FIGHT BAG |
do? |POKEMON RUN |
==============================================================
This is the screen that greets you when in battle. Firstly, you should know
whether its a trainer battle or a wild battle (against another character, or
a Pokemon your able to catch). The little boxes show things about your Pokemon
and the enemy one.
The first thing is the Pokemon name. You may have given your Pokemon a nickname.
If so, this will be displayed instead of your Pokemon species name. On the
right of this is the Pokemon level. The higher the level the more dangerous the
Pokemon generally. The HP is the life points it has. If your against a computer
character, you want to take this down to zero, the same thing can be said if
your just training against a wild Pokemon. If your trying to capture it, then
I suggest leaving some before you throw a PokeBall (though this is covered in
much more detail later on).
If the HP bar is yellow, then the Pokemon has below half its health. If its red,
it has a very small amount. You will hear a danger noise when its this low.
On the left of the HP sign is where status conditions are shown. Certain moves
hinder a Pokemon by giving it a status condiition (these are explained in
greater detail later on). Though, I must warn you that not all status
conditions show up. (Covered in much greater detail later on).
Finally on the left of this there may be a small black and white circle. If this
appears next to the enemy Pokemon, you have this Pokemon. If not, then it isn't
recorded in your PokeDex (and I reccomend you capture it).
===============================================================================
4.2.2 Where to find Pokemon
===========================
Pokemon can be found in nearly every location in the game. But just standing
in a spot won't catch you all 386 creatures.
Grass - the grass on nearly every route holds wild Pokemon. If you look at
my place references, or as your working through the guide you can find tables
showing you which Pokemon can be found in the grass on which routes. If you HAVE
to walk through grass and don't want to battle wild Pokemon, use HM01 Cut, as
it cuts down the grass.
Surfing - using HM05 surf you can go across the water. When you do this, you
can battle Pokemon (you meet different Pokemon than you usually would if you
were fishing)
Fishing - there are three rods that are obtainable throughout the game. Using
these you can catch Pokemon in the rivers, seas and lakes in Hoenn.
Dungeons - when in ANY dungeon, it is like your in grass permanently and you'll
battle many monsters.
Another way to avoid battles is to use repel. It works in dungeons as well, so
if you want to preserve your Pokemon or want to go quicker, you can use this.
===============================================================================
4.2.3 Status Conditions
=======================
These can effect your Pokemon and the opposing Pokemon. They do many different
things from eat away at health, to make you unable to attack. Even give the
opposing Pokemon back some health.
These five are ones that the game tells you about. They use little symbols next
to your HP to signify which one your Pokemon has. It can only have one of these:
============================================================
Status |In Game|What it does |
============================================================
BURN | BRN |Takes away opponents health |
POISON | PSN |Takes away opponents health |
PARALYZ| PRZ |50% chance opponent won't be able to attack|
FREEZE | FRZ |A chance opponent won't be able to attack |
SLEEP | SLP |Foe will not be able to use normal attacks |
============================================================
These four can't be seen ingame and you can have any amount of them that the
opponent throws at you.
==================================================================
Stauts |What it does |
==================================================================
CURSE |If you have a curse, you will loose some HP every turn|
LEECH SEED|Takes an amount of health from you, given to opponent |
CONFUSION |Confuses your Pokemon. May not be able to attack |
ATTRACT |Pokemon has fallen in love. May not be able to attack |
==================================================================
YOu can get rid of any status condition with the right items:
=====================================================================

4.2.5 Battle Chart
==================
This tells you what kind of damage the types of moves will do to your Pokemon.
So if you used an Electric Type move on a Water Pokemon, then it would do x2
damage.
You get these messages in game to show you what type of damage it did as well:
============================================
Message |Damge Ratio|
============================================
"Super effective" | x2|
"not very effective..." | x0.5|
"It doesn't effect >pkmn name<"| x0|

4.3 Stats of Pokemon
====================
The stats of Pokemon range from anything. EV's to IV's. Special Attack, HP,
damage calculations. They are all covered here.
===============================================================================
4.3.1 Visable Stats
===================
Each Pokemon in its Summary page has a few stats showing. The most obvoius ones
with values that change as the Pokemon gains levels and evolves are HP, Attack,
Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed.
HP - this is the amount of hit points your Pokemon has. the higher it is, the
more dureable it is.
Attack - physical attacks get their power DIRECTLY off this. The formula for
damage calculations is found further on in the guide, as is the listings for
what types of moves are physical moves.
Defense - when your Pokemon is attacked by a physical move, this determines how
much HP it takes away. The higher this is, the less it affects the HP.
Special Attack - Special Attacks get their power DIRECTLY off this. The formula
for damage calculations is found further on in the guide, as is the listings
for what types of moves are physical moves.
Special Defense - when your Pokemon is attacked by a special move, this
determines how much HP it takes away. The higher this is, the less it affects
the HP.
These all will rise as you level up. In truth, a Pokemon's level does not
show its strength, indeed it is his stats that do. When evolving, stats
may decrease (eg Poliwhrls evolution to Poliwrath - speed is decreased)
but only in rare circumstances and you shouldn't worry too much unless your an
expert.
You may be wondering which attacks are "special" attacks, and which are
"physical. Well, here's the answer;
Physical Special
-------- -------
Normal Fire
Fighting Water
Poison Electric
Ground Grass
Flying Ice
Bug Psychic
Rock Dragon
Ghost Dark
Steel
===============================================================================
4.3.2 Experiance Points
=======================
Alright. When levelling up, Pokemon gain levels. To get to the next level, you
need a certain amount of experiance points. Not all Pokemon level up at the
same amount of experiance points. Indeed, some Pokemon can take a very long
time to reach the best level.
By kinds I mean the difficulty of levelling up. Here is a compelation of all
Pokemon. Find the Pokemon you want, see what its "difficulty" rating is.
Find the level you want the value for. And you have the experiance number you
want.

Tricks for levelling Up Quicker
===============================
The best item for levelling up is probably the Lucky Egg, usually attached
to wild Chansey's. These DOUBLE the amount of experiance gained. Exp. Share
is also good, as the Pokemon gaining it will get half the experiance from
the battle.
If you have a Pokemon first in your party, then switch it too a more
powerful beast, your able to give the first in your party some experiance.
This is good for when you want to train weak beasts, or Pokemon for gaining
happyness levels.
Pokemon recieved in a trade get 1.5x the amount of experiance points. This
means that you can train a Pokemon 50% quicker. If you also have a lucky egg
with this, you can essentially earn xp points at three times the normal rate.
Around 540,000xp points needed to get a Pokemon on "hardest" to level 100.
Thats less than a normal Pokemon on very easy.

4.3.3 Iv'S
==========
*If you wish to know more about how IV's are passed on during breeding, consult
my breeding guide.
IV stands for individual value. Though over the years Nintendo have denied the
existance of such numbers, When you meet a wild Pokemon, for each of its 6
stats, a value between 0 and 31 is set. When a stat is at 31, at level 100, it
is at its TRUE value's maximum. So the higher the number, the better it is.
The chances that a Pokemon's IV's will be the same number are around 1 in
887,000,000 which isn't even taking into account whether the Pokemon is the
same species... not to even mention the hundreds of other variables.
In my PokeDex, have a look to see who has higher base stats, as base stats
determine what level IV a Pokemon is. The Stat listins show who has the highest
Base stats values for each stat, allowing you to pick the best Pokemon for the
job.
In the Battle Frontier there is a man that tells you the total level of IV's
that the top Pokemon in your party has. He also tells you how good the highest
IV is that your Pokemon has.
(When the game is out in English, I will tell you the phraise he uses)
I will now show you the formula to work out your Pokemon's IV number. Effort
Points are dealt with later on, so if you dno't know what they are read that
first before attempting to work any of this out.
===============================================================================
Attack, Defense, Sp.Att, Sp.Def and Speed calculation
-----------------------------------------------------
IV = ((Math.Celling (S / PV) - 5) * 100 /LV) - 2 * BS - Math.Floor (EP/4)
S = stat (the number in the summary screen)
PV = personality value. 1.1 for a positive nature. 0.9 for a negative nature. 1
for a normal nature
LV = Pokemon Level.
BS = base stats (look in the PokeDex)
EP = effort points for that stat. Not Effort Values, but the amount of points
that you have. A newly captured Pokemon will have 0 of these.
*The formula for HP is slightly different.
===============================================================================
HP calculation
--------------
HP IV = ((S - LV - 10) * 100 /LV) - 2 * BS - Math.Floor (EP/4)
s = stat (the number in the summary screen)
LV = level.
BS = base stats (look in the PokeDex, one of the few thins complete)
EP = effort points for that stat. Not Effort Values, but the amount of points
that you have. A newly captured Pokemon will have 0 of these.
Alright. Now, lets put these into a quick practice for your viewing pleasure.
OK.
Entei Lv.50
Timid Nature
HP: 182
Attack: 118
Defense: 91
Specail Attack: 129
Special Defense: 107
Speed: 89
HP IV = ((182 - 50 - 10) * 100 /50) - 2 * 115 - Math.Floor(0/4)
IV = 14
The exact IV was in fact, 15. This method is never completely accurate (indeed,
you would need a Pokemon at level 100 for that to be the case).
Try this out to determine your Pokemon's IV's. If ANYONE has any online
calculators that they wish to share with me, then send the address along to
my e-mail (Seamus_aran@hotmail.com) and I'll add them here. I also take
people submitting damage calculators.
===============================================================================
4.3.4 EV's
==========
While IV's are the stats that a wild Pokemon is given, EV's are the stats that
YOU can give him.
When your Pokemon battles another Pokemon, it gains anything from one to three
effort points in any of the six stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack,
Special Defense, Speed). Remember, when you first obtain a Pokemon, it will
always have zero effort points in all stats.
Ability chnages are seen when a Pokemon levels up.
In my PokeDex it shows you the amount of Effort Points gained from each
different Pokemon when you battle them. In double battles, everyone who
battles a Pokemon will gain the same amount of effort points. When in
a 2vs2 battle, you'll gain effort points from each opponent.
When you gain enough effort points, you then gain an ability level. Its four
effort points to every ability level. For each skill your aloud a total of 255
effort points (63 ability points) in any of the six skills. HOwever, overall,
your only aloud to have 510 effort points in all stats.
You'll notice something when adding up effort points. When you put four into
255, you have a remainder of 3. Thats three effort points that are wasted.
Therefore, I would suggest at the most having 252 effort points, and then use
the left over ones to do something else with your pokemon and add on some extra
ability value.
When a Pokemon reaches level 100, your still able to gain EV stats. Train your
Pokemon the way you wish too, then put them in a pc. Leave them fora while,
then come back and take them out. You'll find that the stats have changed and
you'll have higher stats.
Vitimens (things like Zinc, Calcium) add on ten effort points every time you use
them. However, your only about to use 10 per skill, and 51 per Pokemon. This is
good for gaining quick stats if you need them.
Exclusive to the Pokemon Emerald version, your able to do more with EV's than
you normally can. Current commman berry's can now be used to take away ten
effort points each time you feed one to your Pokemon. This can be used when a
Pokemon is level a hundred. You then add back on the stats by EV training, and
leave them in a PC box.
=============================== This is a breakthrough in Pokemon training. It
Berry |Stat EV Reduced | also means that you won't have to re-breed a
=============|================| Pokemon just to do EV training all over again.
Pomeg Berry | HP |
Kelpsy Berry | Attack | There are a few ways of increasing EV's
Qualot Berry | Defense | gained by Pokemon. Letting a Pokemon hold EXP
Hondew Berry |Special Attack | Share will give it the same EV's as the
Grepa Berry | Special Defense| Pokemon battling. If a Pokemon is holding the
Tamato Berry | Speed | Mach Brace, then it will gain double the EV's.
=============================== As will a Pokemon who has had the PokeRus,
but more on that in the next section.
Here is a table with all the EV values for all Pokemon, not to mention the
best place for a Pokemon to train up.
