A Good Moveset For A Heracross :
Heracross is said to be a good pokemon for beginner link battlers (not by pokedex data, but by competetive battling experts that i met on the internet). it has some nice attack, and a decent range of physical attacks to choose from. it is also the sole owner of STABed megahorn. but enough about the pokemon - its time for the moveset!
heracross
swarm/guts
@salac berry
nature: hasty, jolly or naive
EV spread: maximise attack and speed and don't worry about the remaining EVs
endure
reversal
megahorn
rock slide
swarm is preferred over guts, since the whole point of this moveset is to get heracross's HP as low as possible.
i admit that salac requires you to have gone to an event before, but it is _the best_ item to have on heracross, since even with maximized speed EVs and a + speed nature, heracross won't be able to outrun that many pokemon. quick claw won't do much good because the chances of it actually working are slim, though you could try your luck with focus band. if neither appeal to you, then go for lum berry.
heracross needs speed more than anything here, so i suggested a plus speed nature that doesn't lower its attack. don't worry about heracross's lower defenses; the whole purpose of this moveset is, like i said before, to get your health as low as possible as fast as possible.
If you don't understand EV spreads, go here http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml for an explanation. otherwise, this part is preeetty straightforward.
_finally!_ the main body of the moveset - its moves. endure on the turn when an opponent will deal a finishing blow, so you go down to one health, activating salac berry. reversal (an attack that increases in power the lower your health) will deal whopping damage. from now on you must attack first and knock out every opponent in one hit. or they will kill you. because any attack move will do at least one damage, so no matter how hard you trained up heracross's defensive stats, it will die in one hit. megahorn is for psychics that resist fighting, and rock slide (learned from a FR/LG move tutor in rock tunnel) will kill flyers. and if weezing comes up, switch out. weezing's defense is through the roof and you won't be abe to land a super effective hit on it. with heracross's boosted speed, you just might get a flinch on something that you somehow didn't manage to KO. watch out for quick attack, extremespeed, mach punch or anything else that always attacks first.
alternate moves! you could go back to the ol' GSC heracross, which had protect over rock slide (Rock slide wasn't available to heracross until FR/LG). protect meant that you didn't need to have much predicition skills in order to use heracross wisely. the sucess rate of endure halves each time you use it twice in a row (or three times etc.) so protect (which has the same sort of sucess rate) was used if you weren't down to 1HP yet, before you use endure again which now has the same success rate that it started with. you could also use protect to test out if your opponent has a strike-first move (eg. quick attack) so you don't take the risk that you might die. on an unrelated note, i heard from a friend of a friend of mine that the first time she used heracross on a link battle, she came up against a dodrio after killing one of the other pokes. not knowing that dodrio could be bred to have quick attack, her heracross died instantly. next time she battled, she used protect with a small hope that dodrio might have had quick attack replaced. it wasn't. so she switched out... only to be KOed by pursuit! the third time she battled against that dodrio, she used protect, then endure, then protect, then undure etc. knowgin grimly that that was pretty much the only thing that she could do. after a few turns, the opponent knew where this was leading and used tri attack - and by sheer misfortune, heracross got burnt and died that same turn. in other words, dodrio rocks! ahem, back to alternate move options. back in the days before FR/LG, people were debating which was better - heracross or pinsir. most people supported pinsir because it got swords dance while heracross didn't. now, heracross gets swords dance via the move tutor so if you want you can replace rock slide with swords dance. finally, earthquake can also be included here if you tend to see more poison types (that resist fighting) than flying types.
i say, heracross is a truly gifted bug pokemon that should be a lot more popular than it is, because of its outstanding attack and moveset options.
bye, y'all! |
