Alternate Pokemon Colors :
Did you know that there are Pokemon hidden in Gold/Silver that have alternate colors, aka shiny status? There is no easy way to find them (except for the Red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage) as they appear at random -- but they're out there. If you see specially colored Pokemon, be sure to catch them as they are very rare. You can recognize them by the sparkle effect when they appear in battle, or by checking on the Pokemon Status Screen. Next to the Male/Female symbol, these special Pokemon are marked with three dots. |

one more thing about IVs: they are set in stone once the pokemon is caught. no matter how hard you train, you cannot change IVs. if you want better IVs, catch another pokemon and wait for the best.

another thing: you can change stats, but you can't change IVs. the other stat changes come from EVs, the effort values. this system says that the pokemon you fight in battles determine how much stats you gain - and it works! this means that once you have fought in a certain no. of values, the only way to increase your stats is to increase your level - which means, after many, many battles, the EVs are 'maxed out' and the rare candy item will NOT damage your stats! also, it means that leveling up in the day care center is just as bad as leveling up with rare candies - neither require battling.

plus, in R/S/FR/LG, there are 32 variables instead of 16. so the IV system from those games ranges from 0-31, not 0-15. there is a lot more natural variation in those games, so i expect it would be a LOT harder to find a shiny in those games, but i have yet to prove it.

The exact odds on finding one are independant 1/8192 because the IVs of the pokemon have to be exact:
for those who don't know what IVs are, I'll explain. IV stands for individual value. they can range from 0 to 15 - which means 16 possible variations. say i have a mewtwo, and i rare candy level it up to level 100. its special stat was 3 lower than the maximum a mewtwo can have at level 100 without training. therefore, the mewtwo has 12 IV in special (the special IV is shared because in RBY it was shared, and the game designers wanted it to be possible to trade to the past without glitching up either one. in the more recent games, you cannot trade back to Red/blue/yellow, so the desingers took the opportunity to separate the two specials so that they have IVs of their own). if it had the max special that could be obtained for a mewtwo by total rare canding to level 100, its special IV would be 15. get it?
HP: doesn't matter
Attack: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15 IVs. therfore, there is a 1/2 chance of getting this stat right.
defense: 10 IVs. 1/16 chance of getting this right.
Speed: 10 IVs. 1/16 chance of getting this right.
Special: 10 IVs. 1/16 chance of getting this right.
so lets multiply! 1/2 times 1/16 times 1/16 times 1/16 rounds off to 1/8192!
also, you can get a shiny ditto:
First, trade a shiny into pokemon red/blue/yellow (usually red gyrados). now, teach it mimic. go against a wild ditto. it transforms into your pokemon. mimic transform.
then use transform. with luck, it will transform into you again. now catch it! trade it to Gold/Silver/Crystal and you have a shiny ditto (its blue).
i worked out the chances of getting a shiny this way - and this is how it works:
when breeding with a ditto, some IVs are passed down. i heard that there is a 1/64 chance of getting a shiny through breeding in this way.
