You might already know about the shortcut in the water between ecruteak and mahogany.
when you surf in the water, go to the centre 'island' (where the apricorn bushes, headbutt-able trees and cut-able shrub is) go inside the cave. you will need flash, surf and waterfall.
go in the water and up the waterfall and down the ladder.
next you find yourself in a 'maze' of ledges and puddles. work your way up until you can't go any higher.
theses are some of the items you will find:
- escape rope (escape from this wretched cave)
- dragon scale (give it to a seadra and it evolves into KINGDRA when traded)
- TM 40 (defense curl; very useful in conjunction with rollout)
- Ether (restores 10pp on one move)
go into the ladder thats right near the top and you'll find yourself in another more brightly lit cavern. explore around and you'll eventually find the karate king, and he's pretty easy with a level-30-or-so hitmonlee and hitmonchan.
Make sure you have a spare slot in your party because he gives you tyrogue, the baby form of hitmonlee, hitmonchan and hitmontop.
tyrogue evolves at level 20 into one of the three hit-monsters depending on its stats:
Atk>Def = hitmonlee
Atk
Atk=Def = hitmontop
