As well, if you have a sniper rifle handy, line up a shot parallel to the dropship bay door. You can often knock out several grunts on Easy or Normal difficulty, and stagger or kill an elite, all with a single, well-placed shot. On higher difficulty levels, this is less effective, but still worthwhile.
