Ice Beam: Use this to freeze enemies. Once they’re frozen you can use them as extra platforms. You will need this to defeat regular Metroids.
Wave Beam: It fires in a wave pattern, making it useful for hitting small enemies on the ground. It is also stronger than the average beam.
Spazer: It fires three shots at once and is useful for clearing out sand.
Plasma Beam: It’s the most powerful beam in the game. It defeats every enemy except Metroids in one hit. It’s definitely worth picking up.
Bomb: These are very important for revealing secret passages. You can also use them to escape from Metroids.
Spider Ball: You use this item when you are in ball form. It allows you to scale walls and ceilings.
Screw Attack: This item allows you to attack while you are performing the spin jump. You are also invincible.
Space Jump: Allows you to jump forever in the air, in effect giving you the ability to fly.
Spring Ball: The Spring Ball allows you to jump while you’re in ball form.
Varia: This cuts damage done by enemies in half.

Walkthrough |
Section 1
You start outside your ship. You already have the ability to turn into a ball, 99 health and 30 missiles. Go right until you reach a hole. Jump down. See those two blocks that are sticking out of the wall? Jump on the right block, turn into a ball and go right through a secret passage, which will save you a lot of time. Shoot the blocks below you and go down. Go right and then down. Go left and go to the bottom of the vertical shaft. Go left and you will meet your first Alpha Metroid. After shooting him with five missiles he will die. This will trigger an earthquake. Go left after beating the Metroid and you can find an Energy Recharge and a Missile Recharge. You’ll have to turn into a ball to get to them though. Next go back up the vertical shaft and continue right until you reach your first Save Totem. Save on it and continue right. You’ll see that the lava has lowered and you can go on to the next section.
Section 2
On your way to the next section you will see a pit of lava. Once you have defeated four metroids this lava will go down. In Section 2 go right until you reach a vertical shaft. Go up and go to the right. You will be in a large cavern. Go right and save at the Save Totem. Continue right and you will be in a vertical shaft. Drop to the bottom and go to the left. Use five missiles on the bubble door and go left to find the Bomb Item. Use a bomb on the floor to get a missile carrier. Go back to the vertical shaft. Go up and go right. Shoot the enemy on the wall and jump on top of him. Turn into a ball and you can go through a secret passage! In the next room you can get your first Energy Tank. Continue right to get to a vertical shaft that is similar to the last one you were in. Fall to the bottom(be careful of the guns) and go left. Use missiles on the bubble door so you can go left and get the Ice Beam. Go back to the vertical shaft and go through the first door on the right that you see. In this room there are three missile carriers. You may have to use a trick to get one missile carrier. Shoot a block so you create an opening to the missile and keep jumping as high as you can. Eventually the block will come back. If it comes back at the right time it will hit you and propel you up so you can get the missile. Go back to the vertical shaft and go through the next door on the right. There is an invisible hole in this room. Fall down the hole. Down here you can find the Spider Ball. Use it to get out of the hole. Once again go back to the vertical shaft. This time use the Spider Ball on the left wall and go left to find two missile carriers. Proceed left and you will be in the large cavern. Bomb the ball and use the Spider Ball to go up the wall. Go right, drop off the edge of the wall and then use the Spider Ball on the right wall. Proceed right to battle an Alpha Metroid. Back in the large cavern go up the wall using the Spider Ball and go across the ceiling(watch out for the enemies!). If you can make it far enough you will reach an Energy Recharge and a Missile Recharge. When you reach the Missile Recharge drop down and go left. Go down to the bottom of the vertical shaft. Go right. In this room there are several walls to climb, balls to bomb and enemies to shoot. Eventually you’ll arrive in a vertical shaft. There are three Alpha Metroids which are all easy to find. After they are all dead an earthquake will occur, which will cause the lava to go down. Follow the path to the next section.
Section 3
Go left and up the vertical shaft. Go left and blast the Alpha Metroid that gets in your way. Keep going left to reach a huge cavern. Keep going left until you reach a Save Totem. Save and go left. You will reach another Save Totem. Go left and you will be in the cavern again. In this there’s a hole in the ground-go into it. You can use the Spider Ball to find a set of missiles. Go down and go through the invisible wall. Go right to find an Alpha Metroid. Defeat him and go on. The hallway that contained the Alpha Metroid will lead to a room that has a hole in the ceiling. In the left wall there is a false wall that you can get into if you turn into a ball. Once you're in, go left and use bombs on the blocks to get to a missile carrier. After you get it get out of the secret passage. Go up the shaft and go through the bubble door. You will see a Chozo statue but he isn’t holding anything. Bomb the floor and go through a secret passage. You will see a bunch of balls stacked in a pile. Bomb the balls until you can get to the ball that is in between the blocks. Shoot it and you can get the Varia suit! Go back to the large cavern. Go left and you will be in a vertical shaft. Go down to the bottom and go right. You will be in another vertical shaft that leads to two Alpha Metroids and your first two Gamma Metroids. Behind one of the Gamma Metroids there is an Energy Refill. Be sure to get it. Go back to the vertical shaft(the one that leads to the large cavern)and go to the top. Go right and you will be in the large cavern except you are higher up, so don’t fall! Use the Spider Ball on the left wall and keep going until you reach a small ceiling. Bomb the ceiling until you find a secret passage. Go up the secret passage to get a missile carrier. Get out of the secret passage and continue right on the ceiling until you reach a room with an Alpha Metroid. After defeating it fall down and you’ll see a ball that can only be destroyed with bombs. Don’t go through it yet but use the Spider Ball to go up the wall. Go right and fall down the shaft. Go left, through the bubble door and shoot the Item Sphere the Chozo statue is holding. It will turn into an enemy that is invincible when it’s in ball form. To defeat, hit it with about six bombs when it opens up. After he’s defeated you can get the Spring Ball. Go back to the large cavern.
Remember the ball in the large cavern that you saw earlier? Bomb the ball and go right. Blast the Alpha Metroid, which will cause the next earthquake, but don’t leave this section yet. Fall down the shaft. On the left wall there is a secret passage that leads to the Wave Beam, but I wouldn’t get it. Instead go through the door on the right. You will be in a room with a bunch of blocks. On the right wall you can shoot some blocks away to reveal a secret passage. Fall down a large shaft and go through a bubble door to find the High Jump Boots. Lay a bomb in this room to reveal a secret passage that leads to a missile carrier and an energy tank. Go back to the room with all the blocks and go to the bottom. Shoot away some blocks and go left to find two missile carriers. Go left and fall down the vertical shaft. Go right to find another missile carrier. Go back to the large cavern and go back to the first part of the cavern, which is to the right of the first Save Totem you saw in this section. Use the Spider Ball to go up the left wall and you can find a secret passage with a missile carrier in it. Once you’ve gotten it you can exit this section and go back to where the lava has receded. Go to the next section.
Section 4
Go through the twisting tunnels at the beginning of this section and keep going until you reach a vertical shaft. Go up and go through the first door on the right that you see. Save at the Save Totem and go to the bottom of the vertical shaft. Go right to face a Gamma Metroid. Bomb the floor to reveal a secret passage and proceed right. In the new vertical shaft go through the door on the right. Keep going right and you will reach a vertical shaft. Drop to the bottom and go left to find a Gamma Metroid. After defeating him you can go down and blast the thorn bushes(or whatever those things)to find an Energy Refill. Go to the top of the vertical shaft and go left. Destroy the Gamma Metroid and go left. Go up and you will be in a vertical shaft. Go to the top and go left to fight another Gamma Metroid. Proceed left and then up. You will be in the vertical shaft that leads to the Save Totem. This time go to the top and go right. When you come to a huge cavern drop to the bottom and you will find a lot of sand. In the lower left corner of the sand is a Missile Recharge-blast away the sand to reveal it. Go to the top of the sand and use the Spider Ball up the right wall. Go right to find a hole in the ground. Go down to find the Space Jump. Back in the cavern, go right to find another hole. Go down to find more missiles. Go left to find another Save Totem. Save and drop down the hole. You can go left to get Spazer Beam but I’d keep the Ice Beam. Go right and you will be in a vertical shaft that contains a Gamma Metroid. Be careful not to fall while you’re fighting him. Use the Spider Ball on the right wall and bomb the ceiling. Now go up into the small room. In the left wall of this room is a secret passage that leads to another set of missiles. Now drop all the way to the bottom of the shaft and shoot the sand to go down. Go left and you will find yet another Gamma Metroid. Keep going left. Go through a bubble door to find the Plasma Beam. I suggest you get it. Go back right and you will find a set of missiles in a cage-like structure. Keep going right and you will be in a vertical shaft with spikes on the side. Space jump up the shaft and go left. Eventually you will reach a wall. Use the Spider Ball to go up and use a bomb to find a secret passage. Go left to fight an Alpha Metroid. Blast it and go left to find an energy tank. Go back to the cavern and continue right. In the vertical shaft bomb the ball on the left wall. Blow away the block that is blocking the energy tank. Get the energy tank and go right a little. You will fall down an invisible hole that leads to a missile carrier. Go back to the vertical shaft and fall to the bottom. Go right to find another Gamma Metroid. After defeating it go back through the large cavern, all the way back to the first vertical shaft of the section. Go down and go right. Save on the totem and continue through the secret passage like you did before except this time, when you get to the vertical shaft go to the top and go up. Use the Plasma Beam to clear out this room so you can battle the Alpha Metroid freely. Use the Spider Ball on the right wall after defeating him to find a passage up. Go right and drop through the Metroid sheddings to battle the final Gamma Metroid in this section. Try to clear the area out a little so you can hit him with missiles. After defeating him, go past the twisting tunnels at the beginning of the section. Remember the lava right before you enter Section 3? It has gone down now, so you can go to the next section.
Section 5
Follow the path to find a lone Gamma Metroid. Defeat him and the lava will go down. Go past the twisting tunnels in Section 4 to find that the lava has receded. Go down to find the next section.
Section 6
In this section you will have a choice of going left or up. Go left to find an Alpha Metroid and an Energy Refill. Go up to find a Gamma Metroid and a Missile Refill. To get to both Metroids you’ll have to go past areas where you’re supposed to hop across creatures to get across pits of lava. It’s easier to just space jump though. After both Metroids are defeated the lava will go down in Section 5. Now you can go to a much larger section.
Section 7
Follow the path and destroy the Gamma Metroid along the way. Eventually you’ll reach a large cavern. Drop down through the Metroid sheddings to find a missile carrier. Go back to the cavern and go up. Go left and up a vertical shaft to find a Save Totem. This is a difficult section, so you should save. Go left and you will be in a huge vertical shaft. Drop down and go through the door on the left. Continue left to find your first Zeta Metroid. These are pretty hard to defeat. Try this method: shoot away some of the sand and when the fight begins jump on the platform that you came from. From there you can shoot the Zeta Metroid when it charges. Just be careful not to get knocked back one screen or you’ll have to start over. After he’s been defeated go back to the vertical shaft and go up. Go through the door on the left to fight a Gamma Metroid. Go back to the vertical shaft and space jump to the top. You’ll be in another area of the large cavern. Go right to find a hole that leads to a missile carrier. It’s very dark down there and the missile carrier is very hard to get. Use the Spider Ball on the left wall and climb to the ceiling. If you use bombs on the ceiling in the right place a small hole will open. Keep bombing the next block and you will eventually find a secret passage that contains a missile carrier and an energy tank. Go to the other end of the secret passage and use bombs to get out. Drop down along the left wall and bomb the ball on the left wall. Go through the secret passage to find a Zeta Metroid. After he’s beaten go up through the small passage to find the Screw Attack(you’ll have to bomb through a secret passage). Go back to the large cavern and drop down from the wall to find a Missile Recharge. Space jump to the upper right to find a room that leads to a Gamma Metroid. Back in the large cavern, along the right wall, is a secret passage that leads to a missile carrier. Finally, go up to find the last Metroid in this section-a Gamma Metroid. While you’re fighting it take care not to fall. There is a secret passage in this room that’s on the left wall. It leads to an Energy Refill. Anyway, after the Gamma Metroid is defeated go down. On the right wall is a room that leads to a Zeta Metroid. After he’s gone an earthquake will occur. Exit the section and follow the path to the next section.
Section 8
Simply follow the path to find an Alpha Metroid. Defeat him and another earthquake will occur. Follow the path to the next section.
Section 9
A similar path in this section leads to your first Omega Metroid. It’s similar to the Zeta Metroid except it’s bigger and stronger. After he’s defeated go to the room with the triceratops-like creatures. These enemies give off lots of energy when defeated... well, most of the time. Defeating that Omega Metroid caused an earthquake, so when you’ve gotten a lot of energy from the triceratops creatures go on to the next section.
Section 10
You’ll need a lot of energy for this section, since you’ll have to defeat three Omega Metroids. At the beginning of the sector is a Save Totem. Save and go to the top of the vertical shaft. Go right and climb to the top of another vertical shaft. Go left to fight an Omega Metroid. Try to get in the alcove behind him in order to pump him with missiles. After defeating him go to the vertical shaft and drop down. Go through the first door on the right. Keep going until you reach a vertical shaft. Fall to the bottom and go right. This vertical shaft leads to two Omega Metroids. Use the same tactic for these Metroids as you did for the first one in this section. After they are both gone the lava will recede to the planet’s core and you can go to the last section.
Section 11
Follow the long path to reach the last Save Totem in the game. On the way avoid falling into the pits of goo. Most of them contain invisible holes that will take you to earlier rooms of this section. Save at the totem. In the ceiling there is an invisible hole. Go through it. In the next room use the Spider Ball on the right wall. Eventually you will come to a room that contains an Energy Refill and a Missile Refill. Continue along the ceiling to reach a room that contains the Ice Beam. Pick it up and continue along the ceiling. You’ll finally reach a third room. Go up using the Spider Ball. In this room your Metroid Detector will suddenly jump from one to nine. Follow the path to find a normal Metroid. To defeat them freeze them with the Ice Beam and shoot them with five missiles. There are seven more Metroids like them. When they have all been defeated one final earthquake will occur and you can fight the final boss, the Metroid Queen.
The Metroid Queen
When you drop down into the Metroid Queen’s room she will let out a shriek and lunge at you. When she lunges at you and opens her mouth shoot a missile into her mouth. While she’s stunned turn into a ball and jump into her mouth. When she retracts her head press up and left on the D-Pad rapidly and you will roll into her stomach. Lay three bombs in her stomach and after they explode she will throw you out of her mouth. While you’re inside the Metroid Queen you will lose health so be as quick as possible. After you’ve laid fifteen bombs in her stomach she will die and you can go past her. You can see for yourself what happens after this point. By the way, the ending you get depends on the time you take to complete your mission.
